Smeaton Barn

Smeaton Barn, East Linton

  • Summary: Conversion of Disused Barn To Form Dwelling
  • Location: East Linton

Sensitive alteration to a disused barn. The barn was converted to become a small dwelling. The design used as its generator the existing unusual form of gable end and 4 circular piers with large old pine beams spanning between the piers. The existing roof was steeply pitched and pan tiled. Planning required us to re-create this steeply pitched roof. We had to design the building so that it looked unaltered from the original barn when viewed from the approach/ public side. The barn was completely re-built and extended to the North side. We cut away the new roof between the existing building form and the new extension to draw natural light directly into the heart of the living space.
